Pumatech files patent infringement suit against Synchrologic, Inc.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (1/10/03) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), the leading provider of synchronization software and services, announced today that it has filed a patent infringement action in the U.S. District Court in Northern California against Synchrologic, Inc., alleging that Synchrologic's server and desktop products infringe on six of Pumatech's synchronization-related patents. In the suit, Pumatech is seeking an injunction against future sales of Synchrologic's infringing products, as well as damages for past sales of the infringing products. Pumatech has alleged that Synchrologic's infringement of the six synchronization patents was willful and deliberate, entitling Pumatech to an award of treble damages, costs and reasonable attorneys' fees.

Pumatech's suit alleges infringement of the following patents: U.S Patent No. 5,666,553, entitled "Method for Mapping Translating, and Dynamically Reconciling Data Between Disparate Computer Platforms"; U.S. Patent No. 5,684,990, entitled "Synchronization of Disparate Databases"; U.S. Patent No. 5,943,676, entitled "Synchronization of Recurring Records in Incompatible Databases"; U.S. Patent No. 6,141,664, entitled "Synchronization of Databases With Date Range"; U.S. Patent No. 6,212,529, entitled "Synchronization of Databases Using Filters", and U.S. Patent No. 6,405,218, entitled "Synchronizing Databases".

"We have made a significant investment over the past seven years in our core synchronization-related intellectual property," said Pumatech President and CEO Woodson (Woody) Hobbs. "In order to provide value to our shareholders in return for their investment, we must defend our patents diligently. We will aggressively pursue this lawsuit, and will also consider taking legal action against Synchrologic's customers and partners. We are encouraged by recent court decisions that have upheld patent protection for technology companies in the wireless mobility space."

Pumatech was awarded its first synchronization patent in 1995, and holds a total of 18 U.S. patents relating to various aspects of mobile systems technology - including 12 in the area of synchronization. The technology behind these patents fuels Pumatech's best-selling IntellisyncŪ synchronization engine, which has been shipping since 1996. Pumatech's sync technology has been adopted by nearly half of the Fortune 1000, and has been licensed and embedded into solutions offered by over 200 companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, Sharp, Siebel, Sony and Yahoo!

In addition to its 12 synchronization patents, Pumatech owns one patent relating to a user interface for file-transfer technology and five patents relating to its Mind-itŪ Web-based change-detection and notification technology. Pumatech also owns eight pending U.S. patents, as well as rights to enforce five patents owned by Intel Corporation, under a cross-license agreement between Pumatech and Intel.
