Pumatech brings web-based synchronization to web portals, carriers, and lsps with debut of Sync-ItTM software

Complete Mobile Application Platform (MAP) Now Available For Licensing And Currently On Exhibit At Internet World Wireless Show

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 21, 2001) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), the leading provider of software infrastructure for the mobile Internet, today announced Sync-it, a key component of the company's Mobile Application Platform (MAP). Sync-it, based on Pumatech's industry-leading, fourth-generation Intellisync® synchronization software, enables users to keep multiple devices such as Palm OS̉ handhelds, notebook computers and desktop PCs in sync via the Internet.

In addition to Sync-it, MAP consists of Browse-ItTM software, which enables users to view Web content on- and off-line via Palm OS handhelds, and Mind-ItTM software, which automatically notifies users via email, cell phone, or pager when changes are made to specific Web content.

Pumatech is exhibiting its entire MAP suite, including Sync-it, at Internet World Wireless, Booth #1805, on February 21-23, 2001, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Internet World Wireless focuses on the latest technologies and applications of wireless systems for Internet and network applications in the home, in the office and in the field. In addition to Pumatech's MAP solution, the company's innovative enterprise synchronization solutions are also available for viewing at the show.

SYNC-IT BRINGS THE POWER OF SYNCHRONIZATION TO WIRELESS USERS WORLDWIDE

"Synchronization is a complex process, but it shouldn't be complex for our business partners and the end user," said Brad Rowe, president and CEO of Pumatech. "Since we introduced the first commercially viable sync solutions in the mid-1990's, mobile professionals have seen the need to keep their business and personal lives 'in sync' and stay abreast of important information. Ensuring that this critical information is handled properly is an art form, and an area in which Pumatech excels. More than a million people use our Intellisync software at home and at the office. Sync-it will enable the same reliability and ease of use over the Internet."

Using a "hub-and-spoke" model, Sync-it was designed to support synchronization of contacts, calendar, tasks, and email between the most popular devices, operating systems, and applications, seamlessly and accurately. In the Sync-it model, the Sync-it server becomes the central data repository, deployed within the corporate firewall or in an ASP configuration. Each device and/or application represents a sync point or "spoke on the wheel". Sync-it allows users to perform true, multi-point, Web-based synchronization between Palm OS-based handhelds, home PCs, work PCs, and personal information management software applications that reside on the desktop or on a Web site, using network, dial-up, or wireless connections.

Sync-it also provides advanced sync management features and an intuitive user interface, giving mobile professionals complete control over their data. In addition, the product incorporates established authentication techniques and state-of-the-art encryption technology, ensuring privacy and security throughout the synchronization process. Sync-it is also massively scalable, because it was designed from the ground up in a UNIX environment to support millions of users.

Sync-it will fully support the SyncML initiative, which will extend Sync-it's capabilities to mobile phones. Pumatech is a member of a consortium of several industry-leading companies supporting the SyncML initiative, including Ericsson, IBM, Lotus, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, Inc. and Psion.

ABOUT MAP

The Mobile Application Platform (MAP) is the common server platform on which Pumatech is building its new mobile solutions. MAP is designed for maximum scalability and performance, provides ubiquitous access to mobile devices over both wired and wireless media, and does not require the PC to act as a gateway to the network. The platform is hosted in the public Internet space in Pumatech's Intellisync.comSM Web service, and is available for licensing to carriers, ISPs and Web portals, as well as to corporations looking to utilize its capabilities behind firewall installations.
