Pumatech awarded U.S. Patent for synchronization software

SAN JOSE, Calif. (6/20/01) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), the leading provider of software infrastructure for the mobile Internet, today announced it has received its ninth patent relating to various aspects of its intelligent synchronization technology. The new patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,223,187) applies to the distributed synchronization of databases. The Company filed for the patent on November 30, 1999.

The latest patent further validates Pumatech's position as the leader in intelligent synchronization and continues to strengthen the Company's already robust portfolio of intellectual property - the largest of any synchronization software provider. Patent 6,223,187 is a divisional of an earlier application, Patent No. 6,044,381. Both patents pertain to Pumatech's Intellisync for Notebooks software and are now being applied to the Company's Sync-it Web-based synchronization software. Pumatech holds a total of 15 patents, which protect a wide range of technologies relating to mobile and wireless Internet infrastructure.

The new patent protects Sync-it's ability to send a small amount of data, rather than an entire record, from one computing device to another. The technology associated with the new patent benefits users by dramatically maximizing storage space on desktop, notebook, and handheld PCs. For example, two separate hardware devices, each with a separate database, are going to be synchronized. A code is assigned to the first record of the first database, which is then transmitted to the second computer, identifying the first record on the second computer. The code is used in the synchronization process to determine whether the record of the second database is identical to the first record.

INTELLISYNC GIVES PEOPLE THE POWER THEY NEED TO MANAGE INFORMATION
"Intelligent synchronization technology is imperative to the management of information stored on multiple devices," explained Pumatech President, Co-founder, and CEO Brad Rowe. "There is a growing demand, especially from corporations, for smart synchronization solutions that enable more efficient information transfer and require a small amount of space. This latest patent further strengthens our ability to deliver highly effective synchronization solutions to multiple device users in the enterprise and beyond."

In addition to the nine synchronization patents, Pumatech holds one patent relating to its file-transfer technology and owns the rights to five patents relating to Web-based change detection, end-user notification and personalization technology. Pumatech also has 11 pending U.S. patents, as well as rights to enforce five patents owned by Intel Corporation, under a cross-license agreement between Pumatech and Intel.

NEW PATENT ENHANCES CORE SYNC TECHNOLOGY
The core technology that supports Pumatech's industry-leading Intellisync software also powers the synchronization component of the Company's Mobile Application Platform (MAP), which is currently being licensed to carriers, ebusinesses, portals and enterprises such as CNET, Lycos and Boeing. MAP includes a variety of data access engines designed to enhance the utility of mobile devices, including a sync engine, a personalization and notification engine and a query engine. Pumatech's Intellisync.comSM service bureau, powered by the MAP architectural platform, enables consumers and business professionals to synchronize important information via the Internet, browse Web content both on and offline and be notified of personalized Web information via the mobile device of choice.
