Company's 18th overall patent pertains to the unique manner in which databases are synchronized using fanning and tiling
SAN JOSE, Calif. (06/24/02) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), the leading provider of synchronization software and services, today announced it has received its 12th U.S. patent relating to various aspects of its intelligent synchronization technology, increasing the Company's technology portfolio to a total of 18 U.S. patents. The new patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,405,218) applies to the manner in which Pumatech's Intellisync® product family uses fanning and tiling functions to synchronize recurring and multi-day events, appointments and tasks across personal information managers (PIMs) and devices. The patent is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Patent No. 5,943,676, "Synchronization of Recurring Records in Incompatible Databases," which was issued on Aug. 24, 1999. The Company filed for the patent on Oct. 9, 1998.
The award of Pumatech's 18th overall patent further validates the Company's position as a market leader in intelligent synchronization solutions for the enterprise, and strengthens its already extensive portfolio of intellectual property. The new patent extends protection for Pumatech's unique fanning technology to include tiling functions and provides more detailed descriptions of the components that are included in these solutions. Pumatech's fanning technology ensures that users will not lose data pertaining to recurring events, appointments and tasks when synchronizing between PIMs and devices. Also protected by the Company's 18th patent, Pumatech's tiling technology addresses challenges that result when synchronizing appointments and events that extend beyond a single 24-hour period. This type of entry, containing a "Midnight Crossing," is not allowed by many devices and applications and, therefore, would be truncated during synchronization if tiling capabilities were not present. Pumatech's tiling technology ensures that multi-day entries are transferred during synchronization. Together, Pumatech's fanning and tiling technologies provide the Company with a unique competitive advantage by enabling its Intellisync solutions to synchronize popular recurring and multi-day calendar and task entries, regardless of application or device type.
"Our dedication to the research and development of synchronization technology provides our customers with the broadest range of functionality," said Woody Hobbs, president and CEO of Pumatech. "Our unique and efficient patented approaches extend our leadership and provide the greatest advantage over the competition. The award of our 18th patent is evidence of our extensive accomplishments and it will further enable us to support the widening array of mobile devices used in the enterprise."
In addition to its 12 patents pertaining to synchronization, Pumatech holds one patent relating to a user interface for file-transfer technology and five patents relating to Web-based change-detection and notification technology. Pumatech also owns eight pending U.S. patents, as well as rights to enforce five patents owned by Intel Corporation, under a cross-license agreement between Pumatech and Intel.
