Pumatech to provide synchronization software for Kyocera's next-generation PDA

Kyocera licenses Pumatech's Intellisync® Lite software to provide advanced synchronization capabilities to users of new PocketCosmo handheld device

SAN JOSE, Calif. (07/10/02) - - Pumatech Inc. (Nasdaq: PUMA), the leading provider of synchronization software and services, today announced that Kyocera Corporation has selected Pumatech's Intellisync® Lite software to provide core synchronization capabilities for Kyocera's next-generation handheld device. Under the agreement, Pumatech's Intellisync Lite will be bundled with the new Kyocera PocketCosmo to provide complete synchronization of e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes and expense data between the new Java-based handheld and the Microsoft Outlook and Palm Desktop PC-based software applications. In addition, Intellisync Lite for Kyocera PocketCosmo will provide advanced synchronization capabilities such as intelligent field mapping, custom filtering, and full conflict resolution to ensure the accuracy, convenience, and reliability associated with Pumatech's Intellisync software.

"PDAs play a pivotal role in extending important corporate information - but only when supported by an effective synchronization solution that ensures the data is accurate and up to date," said Woody Hobbs, president and CEO of Pumatech. "Our Intellisync Lite software enables device manufacturers to better target the enterprise market by integrating our industry-leading synchronization technology with their offerings to provide users with most advanced synchronization functionality available on the market today."

Kyocera will also develop PocketCosmo-compliant versions of Intellisync that will support additional PC applications such as Lotus Notes and Organizer, ACT!, Microsoft Exchange and Novell GroupWise, and will be sold through Pumatech's corporate salesforce. In the coming months, Pumatech and Kyocera will work together on several co-marketing projects to raise awareness of the distinct value proposition that the new Kyocera device and Pumatech's Intellisync software offer enterprises that are looking to integrate handheld devices into their business processes.

"We believe that personal digital assistants will be recognized as indispensable tools for the future business market, and our goal is to provide enterprises with a next-generation handheld capable of meeting the diverse needs of all users," said Hajime Kimura, marketing manager of Kyocera's communication system group. "The PocketCosmo was designed to ensure that the device's inherent features provide the most robust functionality possible, from high-speed Java capabilities to synchronization. Pumatech's Intellisync Lite was the ideal solution because it enabled us to supply our customers with more out-of-the-box functionality than offered by virtually any other PDA on the market today."

The new Kyocera PocketCosmo is a high-performance device that meets the diverse needs of a next-generation mobile environment where connectivity and compatibility with all types of communication terminals is a requirement. Available to consumers in late July 2002, the PocketCosmo's robust feature set includes an Internet browser with security functions such as 128bit SSL, a Japanese input function for enhanced ease of use, the ability to view highly versatile attachment files, and support for multiple e-mail accounts. The Kyocera PocketCosmo is a cutting-edge business tool that will create a business environment in which users are provided with extensive added value. This next-generation handheld device from Kyocera is capable of high-speed Java execution on a PDA operating program, and is primarily geared for corporate use.
