Pumatech awarded U.S. Patent for synchronization software

SAN JOSE, Calif. (10/24/01) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), a leading provider of enterprise-level software products and services that deliver highly relevant information - wherever and whenever it's needed, today announced it has received its tenth patent relating to various aspects of its intelligent synchronization technology. The new patent (U.S. Patent No. 6,304,881) applies to Pumatech technology that provides a method for the partial synchronization, over wired and wireless networks, of personal information databases between a remote computer and central database. The company filed for the patent on March 3, 1998.

The latest patent further validates Pumatech's position as the leader in intelligent synchronization and demonstrates the company's commitment to servicing the enterprise. Strengthening Pumatech's already robust portfolio of intellectual property, the new patent protects the unique and proven way in which Pumatech's enterprise products, including Intellisync Anywhere and Sync-it software, enable synchronization between server-based and remote personal information databases. By intelligently determining the appropriate communications path by which information is updated across server and remote personal information databases, Pumatech's patented technology ensures that enterprise users are able to update and synchronize calendar and contact information with the same speed and accuracy its customers have come to expect of the award-winning Intellisync desktop product. For example, Pumatech's patented technology determines the type of communications path over which synchronization will occur by selecting one of many available wired or wireless connections, based on the user's preference for both the cost of utilizing the communications path and its speed.

NEW PATENT ENHANCES PUMATECH'S ABILITY TO KEEP THE ENTERPRISE IN SYNC
"Intelligent synchronization technology plays a pivotal role in enabling corporations to function in real-time, improving the productivity and efficiency of employees," said Brad Rowe, president and CEO of Pumatech. "With this latest patent, we further strengthen our ability to help make the Real-time Enterprise a reality for Global 2000 companies, by ensuring that the most current information stored in corporate databases is immediately available, and that updated information can be accessed from the point where business is conducted."

In addition to its 10 patents pertaining to synchronization, Pumatech holds one patent relating to its file-transfer technology and owns the rights to five patents relating to Web-based change-detection, end-user notification and personalization technology. Pumatech also has 10 pending U.S. patents, as well as rights to enforce five patents owned by Intel Corporation, under a cross-license agreement between Pumatech and Intel.
