Pumatech's patent infringement claims against Extended Systems validated by outside expert

SAN JOSE, Calif. (11/25/02) - Pumatech, Inc. (NASDAQ: PUMA), the leading provider of synchronization software and services, announced today that it will continue to vigorously pursue litigation against Extended Systems, Inc., following validation of its patent-infringement suit. The claims in the suit were validated by the firm of Johnson-Laird, Inc., intellectual property infringement experts, retained by Pumatech's attorneys to review Pumatech's claims and patents.

The patent infringement action, filed in the U.S. District Court in Northern California in April 2002, alleges that Extended Systems' server and desktop products infringe eight of Pumatech's synchronization-related patents. Pumatech is seeking an injunction against future sales of Extended Systems' infringing server and desktop products, as well as damages for past sales of the infringing products. Pumatech has alleged that Extended Systems' infringement of the patents was willful and deliberate, entitling Pumatech to an award of treble damages, costs and reasonable attorneys' fees.

"We have made a significant investment over the past seven years in our core synchronization-related intellectual property," said Pumatech President and CEO Woodson (Woody) Hobbs. "In order to provide value to our shareholders in return for their investment, we must defend our patents diligently. Our belief that Extended Systems could not have developed its desktop and server-based offerings without violating Pumatech's patents has been confirmed by our intellectual property experts, Johnson-Laird, Inc. We will continue aggressive pursuit of this lawsuit, and will also consider taking legal action against Extended Systems' customers and partners. We are encouraged by recent court decisions that have upheld patent protection for technology companies in the wireless mobility space. We expect to take action shortly against other companies that we believe are infringing our synchronization patents."

Pumatech was awarded its first synchronization patent in 1995, and holds a total of 18 U.S. patents relating to various aspects of mobile systems technology. The technology behind these patents fuels Pumatech's best-selling IntellisyncÒ synchronization engine, which has been shipping since 1996. Pumatech's sync technology has been adopted by nearly half of the Fortune 1000, and has been licensed and embedded into solutions offered by over 200 companies, including Microsoft, Oracle, Sharp, Siebel, Sony and Yahoo!

Pumatech's suit alleges infringement of the following patents: U.S. Patent No. 5,392,390, entitled "Method for Mapping, Translating, and Dynamically Reconciling Data Between Disparate Computer Platforms"; U.S Patent No. 5,566,553, entitled "Method for Mapping Translating, and Dynamically Reconciling Data Between Disparate Computer Platforms"; U.S. Patent No. 5,684,990, entitled "Synchronization of Disparate Databases"; U.S Patent No. 5,701,423, entitled "Method for Mapping, Translating, and Dynamically Reconciling Data Between Disparate Computer Platforms"; U.S. Patent No. 5,943,676, entitled "Synchronization of Recurring Records in Incompatible Databases"; U.S. Patent No. 6,141,664, entitled "Synchronization for Databases With Date Range"; U.S. Patent No. 6,212,529, entitled "Synchronization of Databases Using Filters", and U.S. Patent No. 6,405,218, entitled "Synchronizing Databases".
